Oak Trusses Make Your Home Look Beautiful

Oak Timber Structures offer bespoke, structural, and decorative exposed oak trusses. Produced by our skilled team, our kit form oak trusses are custom-tailored to fit the size of any building.

From Westminster Hall to Notre Dame Cathedral, oak vaulted ceilings feature in the grandest buildings. They're a powerful and striking presence in any structure.

We’ve produced trusses for impressive structures over the years. You’ll find photos of our work in the gallery section below.

From cathedral-sized structural oak trusses to small cottage feature trusses, we’re confident in producing the best quality truss for any aesthetic.

Whatever the size of the project, our oak trusses introduce traditional extravagance to home or business. What’s more, we create every solid oak truss with the same high-quality regardless of size.

Our oak roof trusses enhance the personality of any home, whether installed in a rugged cottage or a modern, sleek property. Whatever the structure, our trusses will turn heads with their natural beauty.

We sculpt our oak trusses to the highest quality using well-sourced, sustainable oak. Made from either green oak or air dried oak, each is available to select on the 3D design tool.

Green oak trusses use freshly sawn oak. Felled only months prior, fresh sawn oak has a high moisture content. It's a popular choice because as moisture leaves the green oak, joints become tighter.

Not to mention, it's far more cost-effective. Over time, green oak will reach the same moisture content as air dried oak so will share the same visual characteristics.

Air dried oak is one to three years along the drying process. So, some of the movement has occurred, and the expected characteristics of aged oak are present. The effects of movement include surface checks, splits and cracks.

Why Use Oak For Trusses?

Oak is timber of great strength. Crafted from the finest oak, our trusses last for decades and have little to no maintenance requirements.

Also, oak is brimming with good looks and charm. It's these two vital characteristics that have made oak a go-to in construction for thousands of years.

With its rich golden colour and distinctive grain texture, oak is full of elegance. Versatile, there’s an opportunity to stain oak to change the colour or emphasise grain texture. Yet, when left untreated, oak ages with grace.

Quality, Craftsmanship & Construction Techniques

We craft our bespoke solid oak trusses to customer specifications and dimensions with immaculate attention to detail.

It starts with superior quality fresh sawn oak sourced from sustainable European forests. We only use QPA and QP1 grade oak, the highest quality of European Oak available.

Our experienced artisans pour their lifelong knowledge to sculpt every oak truss. Unless customers specify a rough sawn finish, we plane trusses on each side, leaving a luxuriously smooth finish.

We design our structures using traditional mortise and tenon joints with oak dowel reinforcements. The combination of fresh sawn high-grade oak and such peak craftsmanship makes our solid oak trusses both elegant and durable.

Oak Truss Pricing

An oak truss under construction

Our oak trusses are an affordable way to add grandeur to any home.

We understand the stresses involved in getting a quote. That’s one reason we developed the online oak truss designer.

The oak truss designer updates for real-time pricing allowing you to adjust the truss to suit your needs and budget. The price is fixed to your design and the only additional charge could be a delivery surcharge. Added during the checkout process, the amount adjusts according to your bespoke structure size and the delivery location.

At Oak Timber Structures, we spotted a gap in the market for kit form, high-quality yet affordable oak trusses. We pride ourselves on the best quality oak trusses at lower prices. There is no catch. We believe in honest, transparent pricing.

Understanding The Parts of an Oak Truss

Every part of an oak truss has a name. Here are the key components that make up our oak trusses and the role they play.

Tie Beam

Oak Truss Tie Beam

Truss Tie Beam

The tie beam sometimes referred to as the bottom chord, is the large oak beam running horizontally at the bottom of the truss. Resting on top of walls, it spans the distance of the room and supports other sections of the oak truss above it.

Our online designer allows for adjustment of the tie beam span according to the required width between two walls. Also, the width and height of the tie beam are adaptable to suit.

We've produced plenty of trusses in a range of designs, some include a curved tie beam which offers a very unique and interesting aesthetic.

Shaped King Post / King Post / Curved Queen Post

Oak Truss King Post

Truss King Post

The King Post is the vertical beam in the centre of the tie beam running towards the top of the truss. This post serves to add strength to the oak truss.

Whilst our designer allows for three unique designs, we can create almost any design. The king post is a standard straight vertical beam. Whereas, a shaped king post tapers towards the top and bottom of the beam.

Advised for wider trusses, queen posts use two vertical beams instead of the one on a king post. Because of the extra beam, queen post designs can span lengthier openings.

Rafters

Oak Truss Principal Rafters

Truss Rafters

The rafters are the angled beams that run parallel to the roof. Principal Rafters extend from the end of the tie beam to the peak of the oak truss.

Our 3D designer allows users to specify where the rafter meets the tie beam and the roof pitch angle to match the gable gradient. Rafters are fundamental to the structural integrity of an oak truss.

Braces

Oak Truss Braces

Truss Braces

Braces support the truss and reinforce the rafters. With an angled connection to the rafters, braces either join at the king post or tie beam. Depending on the size of the oak truss, braces aren't a necessity.

Even when they're not a structural requirement, many customers want them for aesthetic purposes. The striking inclusion of braces offers yet another dimension to an oak truss.

Whether the oak bracing has curvature or straight depends on customer preference. Bracing shape and size are adjustable on the online designer.

Ridge Beams

Oak Truss Ridge Beams

Truss Ridge Beam

The ridge beam is the horizontal structural beam that the truss rafters connect to at the apex of the roof. This beam typically runs along the length of the ceiling and offers support to the overall structure aswell as an anchor point for the rafters.

Using the designer you can specify the length and dimensions of the ridge beam to suit your roofing structure. If you intend to add multiple trusses, the length of the ridge beam will set the end points of the complete roofing structure and additional trusses will be spread evenly between them.

Purlins

Oak Truss Ridge Beams

Truss Purlins

Purlins are additional horizontal beams the run parallel to the ridge beam along the top of your trusses. These are to provide support for the roofing material and help distribute the load evenly which enhances strength and stability of the full structure.

Use the Purlin settings to select dimensions and quantity required up to a maximum of two pairs.

Combining Roofing Elements

Oak Truss Connected By Purlins/Ridge

Trusses connected

Combining the Ridge beam, Purlins and multiple trusses you can design the entire roofing structure of your building. Modify the length and spread of the oak trusses to your exact requirements and watch as it takes form in the online designer.

You can choose between 1 set or two sets of purlins depending on the project, alongside any additional trusses you'd like between your main trusses.

Trusses are an age-old engineering wonder. They’ve reinforced Egyptian boats dating back to 1250 BCE and continue to be prevalent in today's structural wonders. For more information on the mechanics of trusses, refer to the Wikipedia Truss Page. Wikipedia's Truss Page.

Types of Oak Truss We Make

At Oak Timber Structures, we supply different truss types. Each with distinguishing characteristics. Some of the following styles are available to customise on our online designer. But, we're always adding more types. Remember, we're on hand at any point throughout the design process to consult and advise.

Oak King Post Truss

King Post Truss
King Post Truss

Oak king post trusses are notable as they feature a central vertical post known as a king post. For any building, whatever the size, our oak king trusses deliver wonderful aesthetics. With natural beauty and a powerful air of tradition, they'll create warmth in any room.

Made from the finest European oak and crafted with meticulous attention to detail, our king post trusses are of the highest quality. Along with our knowledge, we have the vital skills to create a long-standing king post truss. Designing a bespoke king post truss is possible with our 3D online designer.

Oak Queen Post Truss

Queen Post Truss
Queen Truss

The queen post truss shares similar tie beams, rafters, and braces to a king post truss. Yet, the standout difference is there's no central post. Because of the lack of a central beam, they create an open space and can span wider lengths.

With awe-inspiring charm, a european oak queen post truss will become a key feature of any conversion. We cater queen post trusses according to structural engineering requirements and customer preferences. Designing a bespoke queen post truss is possible with our 3D online designer.

Oak Raised Tie Truss

Raised Tie Truss
Raised Tie Truss

While we deliver trusses for all manner of buildings, we also love creating smaller trusses. A raised tie truss is perfect for anyone wanting the elegance of an oak truss in smaller settings. With the tie beam raised, a raised tie truss offers more head space. So, if short on building height, a raised tie truss is the ideal solution.

Resembling the letter "A", a raised tie oak truss has the magnificence of a king truss but with the ability to fit into compact spaces. Designing a bespoke oak raised tie truss is possible with our 3D online designer.

Mono Truss

Mono Truss
Mono Truss

A mono truss is effectively half an oak truss. The shape makes them perfect for extensions, lean-tos, or side buildings. Mono trusses comprise one rafter, tie beam, and an extra vertical brace that adds further support. Full of character, a european oak mono truss is a timeless classic feature. Designing a bespoke oak mono truss is possible with our 3D online designer.

Oak Cruck Truss

Cruck Truss
Cruck Truss

Oak cruck trusses offer church-like majesty. By adding curvature to the rafters, cruck trusses resemble those found in the grandest of churches. The cruck truss has had a renaissance in house renovation and new builds. They offer a visual variation to the more common straight edges of king and queen oak roof trusses. For the splendour and elegance of a cruck truss, contact our team.

Oak Arched Truss

Arched Truss
Arched Truss

An arched oak truss is a slight variation on the king truss. The curved bottom tie beam, as opposed to a straight beam, offers a distinct visual difference. Arched oak trusses have a pronounced rustic ambience. They're a more subtle approach to creating headroom. Contact our team, who are happy to answer questions regarding arched oak trusses.

Truth is, however unique the oak truss, we can bring any design to life. For a specialist oak truss with steel fabrication or a non-symmetrical design, we can help. At Oak Timber Structures, we work with customers to produce dream oak trusses. Get in touch for a quote.

Delivery

Truss Delivery

Upon completion, oak trusses arrive in kit form on a lorry ready for assembly. Each section has clear coding to ensure easy construction by a builder.

As with all of our structures, every truss is bespoke and designed to specific needs. We don’t stock standard trusses of any kind. This allow us time to create the oak truss to the best quality.

When the oak truss arrives, you'll need unloading equipment available such as a forklift. Or sufficient labour force to unload the truss. Oak is a very heavy material, so be sure to provide the necessary means to unload the truss safely. We also offer HIAB assisted delivery, which you can select on the checkout page.

Oak is very heavy so please ensure you have means to safely unload from the lorry.

How To Order Your Oak Trusses

All major cards
securely accepted

Ordering from Oak Timber Structures is straightforward. Nevertheless, our team is on hand to help throughout the process. Here are the simple steps to order a bespoke oak truss:

  1. First, create the oak truss using the designer or send drawings to contact@oaktimberstructures.co.uk.
  2. For online orders, click ‘Add to Basket’.
  3. Navigate to your shopping basket where you can checkout securely online. We accept all major credit cards excluding American Express (as image). If you run into any checkout issues, please contact us using the online chat or call us and we’ll talk you through the process. Alternatively, you can order over the phone.
  4. We then produce technical drawings for you to sign off and gain approval from a structural engineer if needed. CAD drawings take approximately 2-5 working days to produce.
  5. If you are unhappy with an aspect of the drawings, we encourage you to call and seek advice from our helpful and friendly staff. They’ll revise the drawings accordingly and send them back to you for re-approval.
  6. Once signed off, we add your structure to the production queue and create it according to the stated lead times. During this time, many people use the approved drawings to get their groundwork in place if required.
  7. Our skilled team assembles the oak truss to make sure there are no issues. This also allows us to code all components for seamless assembly. We then dismantle the truss and organise it into transportable kit form.
  8. If you're running behind schedule, we're happy to store your structure for up to 2 to 3 weeks at no extra charge. Please note that we limit storage time to this. As green oak dries, it shrinks. Shrinkage is normal. In fact, our skilled staff prepares your structure for shrinkage to fuse joints, making them tighter and more robust. Yet, joints can become misaligned and harder to assemble, so it's important to limit storage time.
  9. We schedule delivery by liaising with you once your bespoke oak truss is complete.
