If you’re embarking on a renovation project, the chances are you’ll come across RSJs as a load-bearing structural beam. RSJs are effective, but exposed steel can be unsightly and you’ll want to cover it up fast. Before acting in haste, understand the RSJ is an opportunity, a chance to take your project to new heights.

Our bespoke oak RSJ covers not only conceal the steel, but also create a luxury feature of the renovation mainstay. The solid oak beam displays beautiful grain texture and warm hues, elevating the interior aesthetic while covering the steel. Just like that, your interior has the timeless appeal of solid oak.

On that note, your cover will be a solid piece of oak, no veneers, no joints, just pure, solid oak beams. Our skilled team will take your RSJ measurements and carve out a ‘channel’ or mortice in our oak beams to accommodate the steel. With over 100 years of combined experience in woodwork, it’s a task that we execute with precision.

Combining skilled carpentry with high quality European Oak ensures excellence in both materials and craftsmanship. Your RSJ cover will have a planed all-round finish for both smoothness in visuals and touch.

How To Use The 3D Oak RSJ Cover Designer

Every steel beam is different, and that’s where our bespoke approach comes in. Using the Online Oak RSJ Cover Designer, you can input your required dimensions and leave the complex woodworking to us.

As you create your bespoke design, you’ll see a visual of the RSJ cover update to help you visualize the form. If you go out of range, the designer will inform you, but should you want any design outside of the values, don’t hesitate to contact us. So, here’s how to design your RSJ cover.

Mortice Width (mm)

The mortice width relates to the width of the ‘channel’ that the RSJ will sit within. With this in mind, you’ll have to know the width of your RSJ, so it’ll fit snug in the beam. You can pick any measurement between 40mm to 160mm.

Mortice Depth (mm)

The depth relates to the height of your RSJ and the ‘channel’ it is installed in. Measure the depth of your RSJ to make sure the cover conceals the entire height of the steel beam. Here you can pick a measurement between 40mm to 180mm.

RSJ Length (m)

Oftentimes, builders and architects will know the RSJ length. Input the length measurement and we’ll cut the oak cover to your size requirements.

Price Breakdown

As you input the measurements, you’ll see a price breakdown here. The cost is in real-time, so as you adjust the size, the price alters accordingly.

RSJ Cover Frequently Asked Questions

What is an RSJ?

An RSJ in abbreviation of ‘Rolled Steel Joist’. Simply, it's a steel beam used in construction to support the structure above. They’re commonly used to create open-plan living spaces and extensions by supporting the overhead brickwork. They’re functional but unless you’re going for an industrial aesthetic, they can stand out.

How Do You Fix an Oak RSJ Cover?

Your builder can advise you on the best method of fixing the cover. Oftentimes it’s a case of adding noggins at intervals along the steel. This gives the steel a fixing point to attach the RSJ cover to the beam.

What Kind of Oak Do We Use?

We’ll craft your oak RSJ cover from QPA and QP1 grade oak. This grade of European oak is the best construction quality available. Not only high grade construction quality, we’ll also use seasoned, air dried oak. Air dried oak has been naturally dried, meaning minimal shrinkage and movement.

Is The Oak Sustainably Sourced?

Yes, we only use sustainably sourced oak. We’ll sculpt your RSJ cover from oak, which we source from well-managed sustainable European forests. You can read more here.
