Choosing the Right Oak Garden Structure for Your Outdoor Space

Sunshine is always welcome, but its growing presence can highlight that your garden needs a revamp. Oak garden structures are at hand to become the ultimate outdoor upgrade. There’s the high-grade oak that offers elegance and natural durability, then the structure itself becomes a focal point for you and your friends and family to make memories.

You can be sure an oak structure will revamp your garden by adding both prestige and function, but it can be hard to pick the right oak garden structure for you and your outdoor space. Factors like intended use, available space and even your lifestyle can have you second guessing.

Here at Oak Timber Structures, we understand that every garden and homeowner is different. One of the reasons we only offer bespoke oak structures for gardens! So let’s help you upgrade your garden and explore our different oak garden structures to find the best for you.

Oak Gazebos – Shelter Whatever The Weather

What is an Oak Gazebo?

An oak gazebo is a solid-roofed freestanding oak structure. You can clad one or more sides to increase privacy and shelter. For the sides, we can help with supplying full-height cladding, half-height cladding, or oak balustrades. Square and rectangular gazebos are popular, but that’s just the beginning, we can craft them in any shape you want, such as more unique designs like hex, round, or L-shaped.

Common Uses for an Oak Gazebo

An oak framed gazebo becomes a hub for all things relaxation and entertainment. We've seen our gazebos turn into luxurious spaces, from outdoor kitchens with alfresco dining, hot tubs and poolside chill out spots, or simply a restful seating setting for any weather. Whatever the purpose, a garden gazebo becomes a go-to destination to unwind and socialise.

Design Considerations

There are many ways to make an oak-framed gazebo your own. From the basics, such as shape and size, to different roof designs, side coverage and boarding. Although traditionally a garden gazebo would require plenty of space, our bespoke approach means most gardens can enjoy their charms by making the footprint small or large.

As gazebos have a pitched roof, in general, there's more of an overall clearance to the structure than a pergola. But you’re in control and can modify the minimum overall clearance of 3.275M or above. So, if you like the idea of popping a bottle and spending time with your nearest and dearest under a gazebo, a gazebo could be for you! Oak Pergolas – Light Architectural Elegance

What is an Oak Pergola?

A pergola is a garden structure with an oak frame and crossmembers creating a slatted top. While they are often open-sided, you can also add privacy to this structure by including cladding for the sides and ends. Different shapes are available to make the most of limited space.

Common Uses for an Oak Pergola

A pergola adds some shade but the open beams and crossmembers don’t fully enclose the space. Pergolas are an ideal choice if you want to feel connected and at one with your garden while still having a centrepiece.

Assembled on a patio area, an oak-framed garden pergola is an airy outdoor living space. With partial shade, you can create a dining and seating area, a dedicated spot for relaxation practices like yoga, or longer pergolas can create a grand walkway in your garden.

Whether you opt for a pergola or gazebo often depends on the roof. That being said, you can still get more shade from a pergola by training climbing plants such as wisteria and roses to grow up the beams and onto the crossmembers of the roof. You can also add your own flat roof.

Design Considerations

Your oak pergola designs can accommodate small or large garden spaces. Not only by changing the size, but also the shape. Square and rectangular are the most common, but corner fit, or L-shape pergolas, can slot snugly into garden nooks. By picking no overhang you can also place them flush to walls.

Decorative details can further elevate your pergola as a statement of skilled craftsmanship. Dovetailed cross-member joints for the uniform look and decorative chamfered ends on the overhanging crossmembers are just a few options.

Oak Lean-To – Seamless Transition and Functional Shelter

What is an Oak Lean-To?

An oak lean-to, sometimes called a veranda, maximises space by leaning against a wall, often a house or garage. You can include rear posts so it's freestanding, or exclude the rear posts and attach it to the wall. The sloped roof means you can add a solid roof to divert rainwater gaining a sheltered space next to an existing building.

Common Uses for an Oak Lean-To

We're familiar with our lean-tos transforming patios into functional spaces. The key point being they provide a seamless transition between indoor and outdoor spaces as they sit flush with a wall. This quality makes the lean-to especially handy if you have patio doors which allow you to enter an outdoor living area just a step from your home.

In this scenario, a lean-to can accommodate dining and seating with no long walks from your kitchen. We’ve also seen them paired with a side entrance on a house to create an effective carport protected from the elements.

Design Considerations

Size is all-important for the purpose of a lean-to. From as small as 2M x 2M, a lean-to makes for a stylish log store. Whereas wider and longer lean-tos can cover patios and accommodate cars. But perhaps, the biggest consideration of an oak lean-to garden structure is whether to attach to the existing wall or have it freestanding. It'll be an easy task for a professional to attach to the wall, but some may prefer the freestanding option if you don't want to interfere with brickwork.

Garden Arches – Sophisticated Framing of Views, Walkways and Entrances

What is an Oak Garden Arch?

A garden arch is a rectangular oak frame typically set over a path or gate. They can either have a basic goal post-like design or the more elaborate trellis design comprising 4 upright beams with trellises.

Common Uses for an Oak Garden Arch

The framing characteristics of an arch make it excellent for drawing the eye to elements such as water features, paths, or swing seats. They'll also create grand entrance ways at entry points to gardens or between zones. As they support climbing plants, bespoke oak archways can be the foundation to build colourful walkways and frames.

Design Considerations

The width and height can have an impact on your garden space. Bigger isn't always better, though. You can create an arch from as little as 1M wide and the small size can promote a quaint entranceway for cottage-like properties.

On the other hand, grand archways give a sense of space while adding the beauty of oak. For longer walkways, you may need a series of bespoke oak archways to promote visual interest and form an immersive experience.

If using the arch for plants, consider the density of growth you want. The trellis design of an arch offers more surface area for a higher density of growth.
